Bus and Motorcoach Career Prospects
Career prospects for bus driver jobs, bus mechanic jobs, and other bus and motorcoach jobs are likely to be strong in the near future. Here are some reasons why.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2008-09 Edition, Bus Drivers) employment for local transit and intercity bus
drivers is expected to grow by 13 percent between the 2006 and 2016. This is primarily because of the increasing demand for mass transit due to congestion and rising fuel prices.
Like automobiles, buses have a far greater number of possible destinations than do airplanes, ferries or trains. Since they offer greater cost savings and convenience than
automobiles do, buses usually are usually the most economical option for groups traveling to out-of-the-way destinations.
Buses and Motorcoaches offer:
- Travel within an inner-city infrastructure – ideal for commuters
- Transport of children to school and field trips
- Shuttle travel for short distances
- Travel between states and countries
- Private event travel for groups
According to the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), based on the average price of gas and reserved parking, a family with one less vehicle can save up to $8,670 a
year, with their savings increasing $100 each year. Commuters in Boston, New York and San Francisco would receive the highest amount of annual savings for eliminating one car.
APTA reported that in Boston (number one on their list), commuters can save $1,049 a month by utilizing public transportation - adding up to $12,583 extra dollars in their pockets
per year!
Additionally, buses and motorcoaches offer an environmentally friendly mode of transportation. Companies are continually finding methods to help save our environment on every trip. These efforts have resulted in changes such as decreased emissions from buses, improved fuel-efficiency, going idle when not in motion and simple improvements such as lowering window-shades to save energy. The United States Environmental Protection Agency also recently mandated that manufacturers explore new engine technology that will reduce carbon emissions by 90 percent.
